What Happened – May 16

But list, O list,- so soft and low
Thy lover’s voice tonight shall flow,
That, scarce awake, thy soul shall deem
My words the music of a dream.
Thus, while no single sound too rude
Upon thy slumber shall intrude,
Our thoughts, our souls- O God above!
In every deed shall mingle, love.

It was on this day in 1836 that Edgar Allan Poe got married to his 13-year-old cousin. Edgar and Virginia remained together until she died of tuberculosis in 1847.

The first thing that Wiki takes note of for this day is “218 – Julia Maesa, aunt of the assassinated Caracalla, is banished to her home in Syria by the self-proclaimed emperor Macrinus and declares her 14-year old grandson Elagabalus, emperor of Rome” and the most recent is “2005 – Kuwait permits women’s suffrage in a 35-23 National Assembly vote.

A couple other things that also happened on this day are:

1868 – President Andrew Johnson is acquitted of impeachment by one vote.

1918 – Congress makes it illegal to criticize the federal government.

1965 – SpaghettiOs is introduced.

Happy birthday to Janet Jackson, Pierce Brosnan, Robert Fripp, Yvonne Craig, and Melanie Lynskey.
